In his early life, Impastato moved from Mascalucia to Catania, where he attended the Catholic school. In his adolescence, he experienced a personal, religious and social crisis. After leaving school, he worked in different jobs, including as a guard in the Castellammare di Stabia prison.
In his early twenties he became involved in the anarcho-communist youth movement, the Gruppo Universitario di Liberazione (GUL), and also in the anarchist newspaper "La Città Futura", edited by Wanda de Renzi (sister of the bandit Mario de Renzi). He was charged for possession of explosives in the police station in Catania, but was acquitted because there was no proof that he was planning to use them.
Later he worked as a gas station attendant in Catania, but it was not stable because of his anarchist activities. He spent most of his time in Sicily with his girlfriend, an anarchist woman named Maria Rosa.
Impastato's life changed in 1977 when he met Carmela Coppa, a student in Milan who became his girlfriend and future wife.
Giuseppe Impastato, better known as Peppino (Cinisi, January 5, 1948 - Cinisi, May 9, 1978), was an Italian journalist, radio host and activist, member of Proletarian Democracy and known for his public statements against the activities of Cosa Nostra, following which he was assassinated on May 9, 1978.
He founded Radio Aut in 1977, from which he attacked the mafia until his assassination.
