John Carreyrou personality type is ENFP, so I was a little skeptical he'd have a lot to say about this. But he does, and it's pretty good.
I met the people at Theranos as a journalist. I knew very few of them as people, but I knew that it was a place that was going to change the world.
I had been working on a story about Elizabeth Holmes, who was then head of the company, and I had one conversation with her and she basically said: "I am going to change the world and I am going to change healthcare and I'm going to make millions of dollars." I thought, "OK, I can work with this."
She told me that she had started the company with $12 million, and she was going to be worth $4 billion within three years. I said, "Is that possible?" She said, "It's very possible."
Theranos was a brilliant idea, but it was also a really bad idea. It was the first company that I know of that didn't take its investors' money and run. It took it and ran.
When you're young and you start a business, it's so exciting and so empowering and so fun.
