Most of my childhood memories are of him sitting at his desk in his study, where he would sit and work on his various business ventures, occasionally reading to me. He was mostly a loner, and a very private person.
My childhood memories are also of him driving me around the countryside in his Fiat 500, on our way to visit his friends. My sister and I sometimes sat in the backseat, watching the world go by through the fogged up passenger window.
I remember my father’s sense of humor, particularly his sense of irony. He frequently joked about how rotten things were in the world. He would often cite the Bible saying “the very hairs of your head are all numbered” as an example of how bad things really were. He also loved to quote from the Bible and other religious texts, often to make a point and emphasize a point, or to make a mockery of a belief or idea.
