August Wilhelm Anton Neidhardt, later Neidhardt von Gneisenau, from 1814 Count Neidhardt von Gneisenau (born October 27, 1760 in Schildau, † August 23, 1831 in Poznan) was a Prussian general field marshal and army reformer. After participating in the American War of Independence in 1783 and in the defense of Kolberg in 1807, he rose to military command and pursued army reform together with Gerhard David von Scharnhorst. As chief of staff Gebhard Leberecht von Blüchers, he had a large share in the victories over Napoleon 1813-1815. Gneisenau is one of the most important army reformers of the Wars of Liberation. His most famous descendant was the resistance fighter against National Socialism Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. Open military work and secret machinations tested his energy and patriotism equally, and after the outbreak of the Wars of Liberation in 1812, Major-General Gneisenau became Blücher's quartermaster-general. Thus began the connection between these two soldiers.
