Széchenyi István was born in 1720, in village Baja-Kolozsvár, today called Székelykeresztúr, town Székelyudvarhely, Romania. He was the son of a rich landowner from Baja, and his family had been landowners for generations, but due to the influence of the Székely Hungarian noblemen, they had been converted to Roman Catholicism, and had adopted the Hungarian language. In 1731, Széchenyi went to study in Transylvania at the newly established Lutheran University of Brasov.
