Kathrada mainly fought for the rights of Indians in South Africa but also worked with and was heavily influenced by Nelson Mandela. The SAIC launched the Passive Resistance Movement against the Asiatic Land Tenure and Indian Representation Act which was supposed to give Indians less restrictions in terms of living spaces and job opportunity. When this act was opposed, Kathrada participated in the Passive Resistance campaign where he was arrested. After getting out of Jail, he visited the Auschwitz concentration camp. This inspired him to fight for the end of racism in South Africa. Kathrada went on to become the leader of many various groups fighting for freedom such as the South African Communist Party, led various youth groups, became Head of Public Relations for the African National Congress, and more. He also earned the Isitwalandwe medal, the highest award given by the ANC.
