She and her family harbored Jews from the occupying Nazis until they were arrested in February of 1944. She was released on December 31 due to a "clerical error" one week before the rest of the women in her age group were sent to the gas chambers. After the war, she set up a rehabilitation center for Dutch who were unable to provide for themselves due to the war. She devoted the rest of her life to helping those affected by WWII and later to Christian evangelism.
