My family did not believe me or my doctors when they told me this, so at around age 18, I ran away to California on my own. I had no support system back in Detroit, so I basically went AWOL from my family.
I lived on the streets for a year before coming to California to live with a friend. I was very depressed and wanted to kill myself, so I went back to live with my mother in Detroit.
Ecaterina Teodoroiu (born Cătălina Toderoiu) (January 14, 1894 - Sept. 3, 1917) was a Romanian woman who fought and died in World War I and is regarded as a national hero in Romania. Initially she worked as a nurse near the front, but decided to become a soldier after the death in battle of her three brothers and the capture of her father as POW.
It was an unusual decision for a woman of that epoch, so she was sent to the front reluctantly, but she soon proved her courage and skill as a soldier and intelligence in coming up with battle ruses, moving up quickly through ranks to Second Lieutenant (Sublocotenent), becoming the first female Romanian Army officer. In the evening of 3 September 1917, the Romanian lines were attacked in force by the German army and Teodoroiu was hit by machine gun fire while leading her platoon in the counterattack.
