    He was born in 1942, in Warsaw, Poland. A year later his family moved to Krakow, where he finished high school. He studied law at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow for one year, before he decided to study psychology at the University of Warsaw. After graduating, he continued his studies at the University of Amsterdam. He received doctorates in clinical psychology and personality theory.

    He began his career in Poland in 1972, when he became a lecturer in psychology at the University of Krakow. That same year he became director of the Department of Psychology at the University of Warsaw. He remained at this position until 1988, when he was elected vice-chancellor of the university. He resigned this position in 1993, so he could devote more time to public service.

    Gierek was in charge of several government ministries in the 1980s and 90s. He was in charge of the Ministry of Public Information in 1986 and 1987; then in 1988, he was appointed Minister of Education and Science, which he held until 1989.
