He was born in Engenho Boa Esperança, in the rough of Pernambuco. Lawyer formed in 1939, in Recife, he was leader in 1955 of the Ligas Camponesas (organizations with the proclaimed objective of fighting for the distribution of land and rights for the peasants), in Engenho Galileia.
