    Gaston Doumergue

    Gaston Doumergue, born on 1 August 1863 in Aigues-Vives (Gard) and died on 18 June 1937 in the same town, was a French statesman. He was President of the French Republic from 13 June 1924 to 13 June 1931.

    Charged with important ministerial portfolios, he was first appointed President of the Council in 1913, but was forced to step down a few months after his appointment. Elected President of the Senate in 1923, the following year he was elected President of the Republic for a seven-year term; he succeeded Alexandre Millerand, who had resigned. At the end of his term of office, refusing to compete for his succession, Doumergue withdrew, but would preside over a government of national unity during the crisis created by the riots of February 6, 1934.
