    Husák was born on April 4, 1910 in the town of Vinohrady in Prague. His father, Josef Husák, was a small businessman and a Czechoslovak who had been a leader in the Czech National Revival. His mother, Marie, was a daughter of a poor peasant. Husák attended a school for the children of the middle classes in Prague. He was a shy boy who lacked many social skills. Husák's father died in 1914 when he was 12 years old, leaving him with a trust fund from his father's life insurance policy. In addition, his step-mother passed away in 1920 due to tuberculosis when he was 18 years old. He took over the responsibility to support his mother and sister. His mother's death caused him to develop a strong hatred for "enemies of the state".

    In 1921, Husák joined the Czechoslovak Army and was trained as a cavalry officer. He served during World War II and earned a military medal for bravery in battle. He also earned the Military Cross of the Order of Prince Danilo from the Italian government.

    Gustáv Husák (10 January 1913 – 18 November 1991) was a Slovak politician, president of Czechoslovakia and a long-term Secretary General of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (1969–1987). His rule is known as the period of the so-called "Normalization" after the Prague Spring. Gustáv Husák was born as a son of an unemployed worker in Pozsonyhidegkút, Pozsony County, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now part of Bratislava, Slovakia as Dúbravka).
