    Jaurès was an early supporter of socialist ideas, which he began to acquire at the age of 16 through his correspondence with socialist activists in Germany. He became a literary critic, writing on Victor Hugo, Gérard de Nerval, and Charles Baudelaire.

    Jaurès also took an interest in the history of the French peasantry. He moved to Paris in 1878 to pursue a career as a journalist, where he became interested in socialism. Jaurès was first introduced to socialism by his friend Emile Vandervelde. Jaurès was also interested in the writings of the American Transcendentalists Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman.

    Jaurès' first articles for the socialist newspaper L'Aurore were anti-clerical. He began printing articles on the political situation in France, but after the murder of the French Prime Minister Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte by François Arago, Jaurès sought to avoid being associated with the far right through his articles.
