Francisco Largo Caballero (Madrid, October 15, 1869-Paris, March 23, 1946) was a Spanish Marxist trade unionist and politician, historic leader of the Spanish Workers Socialist Party and the General Workers Union. During the Second Spanish Republic he was Minister of Labor (1931–1933) during his first biennium, and president of the Council of Ministers (1936–1937) already during the Civil War. He said things like: "Democracy is incompatible with socialism", "If the Socialists are defeated at the polls, they will go to violence, because before fascism we prefer anarchy and chaos".
