Colosio was attacked by gunmen on the morning of 1 November 1994, 22 years ago this week.
The attack took place in the northern Mexico state of Tijuana, just over the border from San Diego.
That morning, Colosio had attended Mass at a local church before heading to the airport to travel to Washington DC for a meeting with officials from the US Congress to discuss ways of ending the drug wars.
But after taking off, his helicopter was fired upon by gunmen, possibly using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).
Colosio was shot twice in the head, dying instantly.
