    Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad (11 November 1888 – 22 February 1958) was an Indian scholar, Islamic theologian, independence activist, and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress during the Indian independence movement.

    After gaining independence in 1947, he became newly- independent India's First Minister of Education, serving that post till February 2,1958 (a few weeks before he drew his last breath).

    He is fondly remembered as "Maulana Azad": the word 'Maulana' being an honorific (often used to address scholars, professors or other similar intellectuals) meaning 'Our Master' and he had adopted 'Azad' ('Free/Liberated)' as his pen name.

    His birthday (November 11) is observed as 'National Education Day', for the sheer dedication and contribution he offered, in setting up Independent India's educational foundation.
