João VI was born at the Palace of Queluz on 13 September 1818 of a family from the bourgeoisie of Porto. He was only 17 years old when he succeeded to the Portuguese throne on 19 May 1828, after the death of his father, King John V of Portugal. He was the last member of the Braganza dynasty, when the Glorious Revolution deposed Queen Maria II of Portugal, who was a member of the Braganza dynasty, and her husband, King Pedro I of Portugal. João VI reigned jointly with his wife, Queen Maria II, until her death in 1853.
He had five children, but only two sons survived infancy: Miguel Pedro, heir-apparent to the throne, and Pedro de Alcântara, Duke of Braganza, who was born in 1831. Their mother, Queen Maria II, died in 1853. The new monarchs were affectionately known as "Father and Son", until Miguel Pedro's death in 1861.

Under the same treaty, he also became titular Emperor of Brazil for life, while his son, Pedro I of Brazil, was both de facto and de jure the monarch of the newly independent country. Born in Lisbon in 1767, the son of Maria I and Peter III of Portugal, he was originally an infante of Portugal.
