    Dona Maria I was the only daughter of King John I of Portugal and Queen Eleanor of Viseu and was born in Coimbra. Although her father had several mistresses, he never acknowledged any offspring from these relationships. She was described as beautiful, with a graceful and charming personality, and highly intelligent.

    Dona Maria was known for her sharp mind and her concern for the poor and needy. She was also known for her piety and charitable foundations she founded. She was the only surviving child of John I, leaving him when she was 13 years old. At age 17, she married Dinis, Duke of Coimbra who was a nephew of her mother, Queen Eleanor of Viseu. The marriage was a successful one, but her husband died a few months later, leaving her a widow at age 19.

    Dona Maria I then married the widower Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who was a cousin by marriage to her aunt Catherine of Braganza. The marriage was a happy one, but Ferdinand died the year after their marriage, leaving Dona Maria a widow at age 23.

    Dona Maria I (English: Mary I; 17 December 1734 – 20 March 1816) was Queen of Portugal from 1777 until her death in 1816. Known as Maria the Pious in Portugal and Maria the Mad in Brazil, she was the first undisputed queen regnant of Portugal and the first monarch of Brazil. With Napoleon's European conquests, her court, then under the direction of her son João, the Prince Regent, moved to Brazil, then a Portuguese colony. Later on, Brazil would be elevated from the rank of a colony to that of a kingdom, with the consequential formation of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. Dom Pedro.
