The Qajars were a Persian dynasty of Turco-Mongol origin. The dynasty was founded by Fath Ali Shah (1772–1834), who was a descendant of the Seljuq dynasty. The dynasty was named after the village of Qajar, located south of Lake Urmia in the Khorasan province of Iran, near the ancient city of Tabriz. The name "Qajar" means "of Qajar".
The first Qajar king, Fath Ali Shah, was killed when Khosrow II took power, and was replaced by his son, Fath-Ali Mirza. He was in turn killed by Mozzafar-al-Din Shah Qajar (1831–1896), who was the third son of Fath Ali Shah. His great-grandson, Fath-Ali Mirza, replaced him as king, and died when Mohammad Ali Shah Qajar (1848–1907) was a child.
Fathali Shah, (Persian :فتحعلی شاه) 25 September 1772 – 23 October 1834) was the second Shah (king) of Qajar Iran. He reigned from 17 June 1797 until his death. His reign saw the irrevocable ceding of Iran's northern territories in the Caucasus, comprising what is nowadays Georgia, Dagestan, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, to the Russian Empire following the Russo-Persian Wars of 1804–1813 and 1826–1828 and the resulting treaties of Gulistan and Turkmenchay.Historian Joseph M.
