The guillotine was a French judicial instrument that was designed to be a more humane method of execution. The guillotine was a machine very similar to a chair in that a prisoner would be strapped into a chair and a blade would be placed underneath the head of the prisoner. The blade would fall and decapitate the prisoner. The guillotine was not a very effective method of execution, however, because it often took several minutes for the blade to fall and decapitate the prisoner. In order to improve the efficiency of the guillotine, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin invented a machine that would decapitate a prisoner in one motion. The guillotine consisted of a long bar with a curved metal blade at one end and a mechanism at the other end that would drop the blade. The mechanism would drop the bar and the blade would fall and decapitate the prisoner.

    Joseph-Ignace Guillotin was born on February 12, 1738 in Paris, France. His father was an amateur sculptor by trade, but Joseph-Ignace Guillotin's father never completed any sculptures.

    Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin (French pronunciation: ​[ɡijɔtɛ̃]; 28 May 1738 – 26 March 1814) was a French physician, politician and freemason who proposed on 10 October 1789 the use of a device to carry out death penalties in France, as a less painful method of execution. Although he really did not invent the guillotine, and in fact opposed the death penalty, his name became an eponym for it. The actual inventor of the prototype was a man named Tobias Schmidt. working with the kings physician Antoine Louis.
