Khdaoudj was a young princess whom nature had greatly spoiled. She was the adored daughter of Hassan Khaznadji, the treasurer of the Dey Mohamed Ben Othman. It is said that by dint of admiring herself for hours, in her mirror, she became blind. Since then, in Algiers families, when a girl is too flirtatious and spends a lot of time primping herself, we do not hesitate to remind her of the sad fate of this pretty princess. To guarantee her a decent life, following this handicap, her father Hassan Khaznadji bought, in 1789, a magnificent palace in the Kasbah of Algiers for his adored daughter. This Ottoman residence which now houses the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions (9, rue Mohamed Akli Melek) is a pure architectural gem.
