Willem V is said to have a very good memory, philosophical in nature and good in character, but also indecisive, legalistic and detailed. He lost several functions and retired to Nijmegen. He returned to The Hague in September 1787, thanks to the support of a Prussian army. In February 1793, the revolutionary regime in Paris declared war on him. In January 1795 he went into exile in London, after which the Batavian Republic was proclaimed. Willem ordered the colonial administrators in the East Indies to surrender to the British. In 1801 he relinquished all his rights as a stadtholder.
