    History

    The English character Charles II was the last monarch of the House of Stuart, a cadet branch of the House of Bourbon that ruled England and Ireland from 1649 until its deposition in the English Revolution of 1688. His reign (1660–1685) saw the restoration of the monarchy after the Civil War and his execution at the hands of Parliament.

    Charles was born in The Hague in the Dutch Republic to Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France, and spent much of his childhood in Spain and the French and Spanish Netherlands. After eight years of war, the monarchy was abolished and a republic was declared.

    Charles II (29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685)[c]was king of England, Scotland, and Ireland. He was king of Scotland from 1649 until his deposition in 1651, and king of England, Scotland and Ireland from the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 until his death.
