Barbary Corsair has long been the subject of maritime legend, but in reality they are contemporary pirates that were active in the western Mediterranean Sea in the 18th century, especially off the coast of Morocco.
The Barbary Corsairs are often depicted as barbarians, but by the end of the 17th century the word "Barbary" had become a term of praise and derision. The various states that were ruled by Barbary Corsairs included the Regency of Algiers, the Sultanate of Morocco, the Republic of Tunis and the Hafsid Dynasty of Tunis and Tripoli.
Most of the corsairs operated from bases along the North Africa coast and their raids took place on both European and non-European shipping. Their base was on the island of Crete. The Barbary Corsairs were famed for their fierce independence and their crews were drawn from a variety of nationalities including Arabs, Berbers, Turks and Circassians.
Most corsairs were Muslim but some were Christian and a few were Jewish. Although they were pirates, they generally did not torture their prisoners; indeed some tribes would ransom captured corsairs.
