At the beginning of this project, Julie and I had a couple of common experiences that shaped us to become the people we are today. We were both raised by single mothers who were very successful in their fields. Both of our mothers were very independent and driven to succeed. Julie's mother was a successful entrepreneur. Her name was Jean and she died when Julie was three. I also lost my mother very young and my father was not around much after that.
Julie's early life was very different from mine, but we both had similar experiences with our mothers and we both learned a lot from them.
Julie d'Aubigny (1670/1673–1707), better known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin, was a 17th-century opera singer. Little is known for certain about her life; her tumultuous career and flamboyant lifestyle were the subject of gossip, rumor, and colourful stories in her own time, and inspired numerous fictional and semi-fictional portrayals afterwards.
