Sebastião of Portugal (Portuguese: Sebastião de Portugal; c. 1414 – 1481), better known as Prince Henry the Navigator (Portuguese: Henrique ou Henrique o Navegador), was a nobleman and the leader of the Portuguese discoveries in the western Atlantic Ocean, giving Portugal an early maritime power. He was also an influential patron of the arts and responsible for substantial development of the Portuguese navy and Christian Iberian explorations. The son of King John I of Portugal, he succeeded his father as Prince Henry (future King Henry I of Portugal) and Prince of Portugal in 1433. The following year he led an expedition to the coast of West Africa, where he founded settlements that remain today as Lagos, Portugal and various other locations. He commanded his own ship there until 1441.
Sebastião was born in Vila Viçosa, near Braga, the third child of Infante Ferdinand of Portugal (future King Ferdinand I) and his wife Queen Isabella I of Castile.
Sebastian (Portuguese: Sebastião I Portuguese pronunciation: [sɨbɐʃˈti.ɐ̃w̃]; 20 January 1554 – 4 August 1578) was King of Portugal from 11 June 1557 to 4 August 1578 and the penultimate Portuguese monarch of the House of Aviz. He was the son of João Manuel, Prince of Portugal, and his wife, Joanna of Austria. He was the grandson of King John III of Portugal and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. He disappeared (presumably killed in action) in the battle of Alcácer Quibir. Sebastian I is often referred to as The Desired (Portuguese: o Desejado) or The Asleep (Portuguese: o Adormecido), as the Portuguese people longed for his return to end the decline of Portugal that began after his death. He is considered to be the Portuguese example of the King asleep in mountain legend as Portuguese tradition states his return, in a foggy dawn, on Portugal's greatest hour of need.
