Ismail I of Persia (1178-1220)
Ismail I (1178-1220), the father of the Safavid dynasty, was the greatest of the Persian kings. He was born in 1178 in Ardabil, close to the Caspian Sea, and was the son of Ghazi (1099-1118) and Goharshad (1107-1174). He was the only son of his father Ghazi, who ruled until his death in 1176, and Goharshad.
Ismail I of Persia was the first Muslim ruler to conquer Mecca, in 1218. He also conquered Baghdad, Baghdad in 1220. He was succeeded by his son Mohammed II in 1226.
Ismail I of Persia was an excellent soldier and tactician. He was also a keen astrologer. He is remembered for his conquests of Egypt, Syria, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Egypt and Yemen.
Ismail I also known as Shah Ismail I, was the founder of the Safavid dynasty, ruling from 1501 to 23 May 1524 as Shah of Iran (Persia).
