Giovanni de Ventura was a famous Italian historian and the author of the first history of the Kingdom of Naples. He was born in Naples in 1433. He was a member of the de Ventura family, a noble family from the city of Cosenza.
Giovanni de Ventura was educated at the University of Naples where he studied law and philosophy. He also spent some time in Florence, where he studied Latin and Greek. He was appointed historiographer to the king of Naples, Ferrante, who had been established as king of Sicily in 1442 and was ruling as king of Naples in 1443. The king gave de Ventura the title of first historiographer of Naples and made him archivist. He was also appointed "magister et decanus" of the University of Naples, and in 1445 he was made secretary of the Royal Library.
Giovanni de Ventura wrote more than one hundred and fifty works, including histories, commentaries on classical authors and on the Bible, chronicles and letters. He died in Naples in 1478.
