Thomas O. Morrow was a U.S. Senator from Maryland and a co-founder of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). He was born in 1836 in Maryland and was educated at Fisk University, but later left to pursue his studies of law. He was admitted to the bar in 1859 and began his legal career in Baltimore. He quickly made a name for himself, winning several cases in front of the Maryland State Supreme Court.
Morrow entered public service in 1867 when he was appointed chief clerk to the Maryland House of Delegates, a position he held until 1869. In 1870, he was elected to the Maryland State Senate, where he served for two years before becoming the state’s attorney general. In 1873, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives and served for three years.
In 1877, he became the first African American elected to the United States Senate, serving from 1877 to 1881. He was re-elected in 1880 and served until his death in 1886. His career and contributions were not limited to the Senate.
