In 17th century Italy, Raffaele Piria's father had been a bricklayer who had been killed by a falling beam at a church he had been building. His mother had been a poor schoolteacher. He had been a childhood prodigy. He had been a child with a photographic memory and a keen interest in architecture. A few years after Raffaele's birth, his mother died of tuberculosis. At the age of five, he began to receive lessons from the abbot of the monastery near their home. In 1802, his father died of pneumonia, and when he was seven, the abbot sent Raffaele to study in Florence. For the next six years, he received instruction from some of the finest architects in that city. At 13, he left school and joined a book publishing firm in Florence. His skills were so great that he was soon in charge of all printing and advertising. At 15, he left for Milan to work for Luigi Rusca, a publisher who specialized in art books and architectural books. A year later, Rusca died suddenly, and Raffaele was appointed his successor.
