In the story a princess named Rapunzel is imprisoned in a tower by her evil stepmother, who fears Rapunzel's beauty and wishes to keep her locked up forever. A prince comes upon Rapunzel's tower and climbs up to her window. After he has entered, Rapunzel asks him to cut her hair so that she can get down. The prince agrees, but after doing so, he notices that she has only eighteen inches of hair on her head. The prince realizes this is because she cut off the rest to reach him, and he cuts the rest of her hair off as well.
Rapunzel is then freed and marries the prince.
