Ray was an American actor, comedian, director, producer, writer, singer, and composer. He was widely considered to be one of the pioneers of the television comedy genre. He was known for his wild hair, bushy beard, and his constant rocking back and forth in his chair. Ray was the star of the Gene Ray Show which aired on CBS radio from 1942 to 1956 and later in syndication. The show was one of the first television series to use a laugh track, which had been used in movies since the 1930s.
In 1960, Ray won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series. In 1963, he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing John Brown in “I Can Get It for You Wholesale.” In 1969, he won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Comedy Album for his work on “The Gene Ray Show.” In 1971, Ray received an Emmy Award nomination for “Best Dramatic Actor” for playing a teacher in “The Way We Were.
