French composer Pierre Chabrier
Pierre Chabrier, born July 26, 1841 in Paris, France, is one of the most colorful and talented composers of nineteenth-century France. Although he was born in a musical family, he was largely self-taught. The other family members were trained musicians who played in the orchestra of the Opéra Comique and later at the Théâtre-Italien.
Chabrier was a brilliant flutist and pianist by the age of twelve and frequently played at the Parisian clubs. He also wrote music for these clubs as well as for the Opéra Comique and his first compositions were published by a Parisian music publisher.
In 1867, he was employed as a pianist at the Théâtre Marigny, where he first met composer Jules Massenet, who would later become his close friend.
