Yes, he does have a point about “safety in numbers” for some films, but to give you an example, I’ve never watched any of the films he’s critiqued. I’ve seen one or two movies from his list, and although they’re not bad movies (and he’s right that some of the work he’s done is very good), I don’t see how they jive with his overall point.
What I do see is that he’s very good at finding the key elements that made the movie good or bad and describing them in a clear way. And he has a lot of good ideas about how to improve or enhance those elements in future films, which is where you start to see him as a kind of theorist.
