ISFJ's (and their counterparts INFP's) energy is so directed toward the welfare of others that they often feel guilty if they're not available to help. Their concern for others is so strong that they often feel like failures when they can't help. This is one of the ways in which ISFJs can drive themselves nuts. They feel like failures if they can't help others constantly, because they can't find a way to help them that doesn't come back to bite them.
People with the ISFJ profile are almost always highly competent and dedicated. Even in unhealthy relationships, they're usually very conscientious and diligent about trying to make things work.
The thing to remember is that this type needs to feel like they're helping others, and they can't do that if they're feeling guilty or otherwise "used." So they often sabotage themselves in order to avoid feeling used.
This is why the ISFJ personality type is often an "emotional martyr.
