Cecil Gershwin was born on September 22, 1898 in New York City. His father was tenor John Gershwin, who had studied under Jules Massenet, and his mother was Annette Crofts, a concert pianist. His mother died when he was just 12 years old, and his father was killed in an airplane crash in Spain just three years later.
Gershwin's father's family was Jewish, while his mother's was Christian. When he was born he was named Jacob Gershowitz, but his father changed his name to "Cecil Felix Winifred Gershwin" in honor of his favorite British composer, Sir Edward Elgar.
Gershwin's family moved to Brooklyn in 1910, when he was seven years old. While he spent much of his childhood at the family home with his mother in Brooklyn, he spent some time living in Manhattan with his father.
