Cary is a small town in central Illinois. I drove through it the day of Trump’s visit, and it’s a very strange place, a strange hybrid of decaying past and glossy future, a place where farmland turns into condominiums and strip malls. In the parking lot of the Holiday Inn where Trump spoke, a line of men and women waited to get in. They were mostly white, some on their cell phones, some fidgeting with water bottles, some wearing Trump T-shirts and hats. The line stretched a quarter of a mile back to the highway.
