When he was a senior at the University of Chicago, he took a class called “The Development of Personality,” which was basically a super-long psych class with a bunch of new-agey psychological terms, but it was taught by a professor who was a psychologist. In this class, he had an opportunity to receive a learning disability label for ADHD, but he decided not to because he would prefer to have the label of being a genius.
While he was a student there, he had a professor who was a psychologist and who was on the board of the National Institutes of Health. She offered to take him on as a graduate student and write a letter recommending him for a fellowship. His first year of graduate school was spent in this program, which is really how he began to get the support system to study his mental illness.
In fact, he became so obsessed with studying his mental illness that he would hardly ever leave the lab. He would go to dinner, but as soon as dinner was over, he would be back in his lab.
