Benjamin Franklin, who was both an author and a scientist, was one of the most famous of the American Founding Fathers. He is remembered for his contributions to the American colonies’ independence, including the Philadelphia Contributionship, and for his life as a inventor, printer, politician, statesman, and thinker. He was also a noted scientist, an inventor, and a freemason.
Franklin was born in Boston on January 17th, 1706. He was the son of Deborah Read and Josiah Franklin, a candle maker and soap-maker. His mother was illiterate, and his father was not financially successful. At the age of 10, Benjamin was apprenticed to his older brother James, who was a printer. The two brothers set up their own printing office. Franklin began publishing Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1732. When he died in 1790, he willed his legacy to his son-in-law, William Smith.
