4. A Case of Mistaken Identity
With his trademark scarred face, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter looked like a violent felon, but he was actually wrongly convicted of murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Lula Belle (Rubin) Carter, in 1967.
Carter was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing Lula Belle in 1966. The case was investigated by the New Jersey State Police, who travelled to Canada to interview witnesses who said that Carter had confessed to the murder in Canada.
The New Jersey police told the Canadian police that they had evidence against Carter and he was extradited back to New Jersey in 1967. He was eventually released after serving three years of his sentence in 1967/68.
