I have been trying for decades to understand why Australia, our most powerful ally in the South Pacific, is not at war with China. It is a question that intrigues me and I have pondered it on many occasions. I do not know the answer and I am not at all sure that anybody else does either. But I do know that we have a policy on China and it is not working very well.
The first thing to be said is that as a nation we have no policy on China. And as a nation we should have no policy on China. It is a nation that poses no threat to Australia and has no intention of doing so. It has been our ally since 1949 and we have no choice but to treat it as such. But the great powers do not always behave like allies and we may soon find that we do not like China very much.
