In an article for the New York Times, she recounts how she was first introduced to Elimination Communication, a technique that allows parents not to communicate with their children for the first six to 12 months of the child’s life. She writes that she learned that one day when hearing her daughter, who was 2 at the time, crying, she simply said, “I’m sorry you are sad.” Ours is a story of grief, but also one of revolution, with no small amount of humanity and wisdom.
Nicole’s memoir is a true testament to the power of love, and it has inspired me to be better. The book begins in the hospital after Nicole’s birth. The first weeks were spent in the NICU because Nicole’s heart rate was too rapid and the doctors did not know if she was going to make it. Nicole was brought home for a couple of weeks, but then she had to be placed back in the NICU.
Nicole’s parents had to make a decision: whether to call the doctor back to take her out of the hospital, or to return her to the hospital.
