The series follows a boy named Renji, who is the only child of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni series protagonist Keiichi and his wife Masumi. Renji is a typical kid, but he has a distant cousin named Ryoko who will always get him into trouble. His father is very strict with his son, but is kind towards him. Renji also has a close cousin named Rika who is his childhood friend, and she often tries to get him in trouble.
This anime takes place six years after the events of the original series, and is told from the point of view of the cousins Renji and Ryoko. Renji's mother has recently died, leaving him without a parent figure. While his father's parents are still alive, they are not around very often. Renji's father has moved out of the house, leaving him in charge of his father's house with his cousin Ryoko. His father has also made it clear that he doesn't want Renji to have any friends.
