Kanade was the first victim of the Phantom, who was introduced in Chapter 1. Kanade was one of the victims of the Phantom's "tail", which is a part of the Phantom that is used to control and manipulate the victims' minds. Kanade was taken by the Phantom at a bar, and was last seen standing at an intersection, waiting for someone. It is not immediately known whether Kanade was waiting for someone to pick him up, or for some other reason. Kanade's head then becomes the first body that is possessed by the Phantom, as shown in a flashback scene of Chapter 1. His spirit later becomes a member of the Phantom group known as the "Disciples of the Owl".
