For example, he was a vegetarian because he thought it was cruel to kill animals for food, and he refused to kill the live animals in the zoo where he worked. He was also extremely kind to animals, once saving a horse from drowning when he was a child (the horse swam over to him and shook him, as if to say thank you). At the end of the novel, Jarvis is found alive, but with a broken leg and a cut ear (that he received from being thrown out of the window by Napoleon).
