She told "The Atlantic" that her family was very close because her father worked long hours and her mother taught middle school. She went to Beverly Cleary Elementary School in Bethesda, Maryland, and later attended John F. Kennedy Junior High School. She graduated from George Washington University in 2002 with a degree in psychology.
Darby began her career when she interned for Bill Ayers at Prairie Lights Books in Iowa City, Iowa. After working for two years for Prairie Lights, she began writing for "The Washington Post", where she covered the 2006 midterm elections in Virginia. She then joined the paper in 2007 as an intern and eventually became a member of The Post's staff.
