Tetsuo Shironuma is one of the most interesting people I’ve met here in Japan. He is an entrepreneur who has built the most comprehensive English-teaching program in Japan. He was born in Hiroshima in 1962, and he grew up in Tokyo. One of the most unusual things about him is that he never went to university. He has never even lived abroad.
So how did he become an entrepreneur? Well, most people start their business at the age of 30, after they’ve established themselves in their field. But Tetsuo started his business at the age of 29. He is a one-man show, with no assistant or staff. He teaches English to businessmen (and women) throughout Japan. He also rents out his apartment to English students for between $300 and $500 per month.
Tetsuo’s program is called “English Club”, and it has been running for over 10 years. It is the largest English-teaching program in Japan.
