Sandshrew is very shy and gentle, but is also very loyal. She is easily frightened and tends to run away when confronted with danger. However, she is not afraid to stand up for her friends or her Trainer. She is also very intelligent and resourceful, as seen in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, where she is always searching for new ways to solve her problems. She will often use her intelligence as a way to get out of trouble.

Major appearances
Sandshrew made its first appearance in Pokémon Emergency!. A Sandshrew was the victim of a group of thieves that were living in the sewers beneath the city. Ash and his friends were given the task of saving it, though they were not given any information on how to go about doing so. After learning that it was sick, they decided to enter the sewers to find medicine for it. They found that it had been poisoned by a Weedle that had been injected with a toxic substance.
Sandshrew spends much of its time hidden underground in deep burrows. It only emerges to lunge and drag in passing Bug-type Pokémon. Sandshrew can quickly curl into a tight ball to protect itself from great falls and opponents, but may also throw sand at attackers. While its body can efficiently absorb water to facilitate life in the desert, Sandshrew has been found in caves as well. It also lives deep underground in nests it has created from digging tunnels. Should hard rocks get in the way of digging, Sandshrew will use its sharp claws to remove them before continuing to dig. If it is too wet, its skin becomes wrinkly. It dries itself out by using the geothermal heat near a volcano.
