After World War II, James worked for the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the United Kingdom. He contributed to the development of digital computers at NPL. He was involved in the construction of the first computer that was called the Manchester Mark 1. He worked on the first computer that had both digital and analog components.
He worked on the first supercomputer that used digital circuits for its electronic components. James was also involved with the first digital computer to be used for scientific calculations. The digital computer was called Ferranti Mark 1. He was also involved in the development of the first stored-program digital computer called EDSAC, which was developed by the University of Manchester Computing Service.
