My son was a good kid. He was a good border-crosser, a good listener, a good thinker, a good humorist. He was a good son. He was also a good boy. And he was a good boy because he was a good kid.
But, when I talk about who Milan was, I’m not talking about the good boy Milan. I’m talking about the growing Milan, the boy who was becoming a man. Who needed to have his boundaries and sense of self-worth affirmed. Who needed to have his needs met. Who needed to have someone in his life who would help him learn to be a man in a world that is dominated by women and by men who project all their ferocity and aggression onto the opposite sex.
I have to be honest with you—I didn’t help Milan enough. I didn’t see the signs when I should have been looking for them. The saddest part of all is that I didn’t even know at the time that I wasn’t being a good dad.
